One of the contributing factors to this uncertainty is the lack of understanding about the role of rhizosphere priming effect (RPE) in shaping the temperature sensitivity. Using a novel continuous 13 C‐labeling method, we investigated the temperature sensitivity of RPE and its impact on the temperature sensitivity of SOM decomposition. Our results also showed that rhizosphere priming effects on SOM decomposition were positive at all developmental stages in C 3 plant – `C 4 soil' system, but the direction of the rhizosphere priming effect changed at different developmental stages in the C 4 plant – `C 3 soil' system. Implications of rhizosphere priming effects on SOM Rhizosphere interactions play a central role linking roots-soil system and regulate various aspects of nutrient cycling. Rhizodeposition inputs are known to change soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition via rhizosphere priming effects (RPEs) through enhancing soil biological activity and altering microbial community structure.

In the presence of plants, a priming effect occurs in the direct vicinity of the living roots, and it is called rhizosphere priming effect (RPE). Plant‐mediated and environmental factors, such as, plant species, development stage, soil organic matter content, photosynthesis intensity, and N fertilization which affect RPE are reviewed and discussed in this paper. It is now becoming generally recognized that rhizosphere priming effects on SOC decomposition can play important roles in the global carbon cycle (Heimann and Reichstein, 2008, Kuzyakov, 2010, Cheng et al., 2014). The actual mechanisms underlying rhizosphere priming effects still remain elusive (Kuzyakov, 2002, Cheng and Kuzyakov, 2005). Rhizosphere priming may be affected by soil nutrient availability, but rhizosphere priming itself can also affect nutrient supply to plants. These interactive effects may be of particular relevance in understanding the sustained increase in plant growth and nutrient supply in response to a rise in atmospheric CO 2 concentration.
